So last month I bought an ipod touch for my wife on her birthday. The thing that prompted me to do this was the coolness factor of course, but also because of the Vista 64/Hotsync problem on her Tungsten E2.
Once the Tungsten was relegated to orphandom by Microsoft and Palm, we needed something for her to do all the things that she used to do on the Tungsten: Calendar entries/appointments, addresses, notes to herself et cetera. Of course the Palm had a crude sync-ing email and I could have given her my old wifi sd card that I used with my tungsten T3, but it was so slow you might as well wait to sync. She could edit Excel and Word files using doc-to-go.
I know Palm has a handheld with built in WIFI and stuff, but the incentive to go to that was low even back at the time.
I have to admit, the ipod touch has its quirks, but using the home wifi or stealing a signal here or there, the touch is an awesome device. For those of us who actually like to have the tricorder and the communicator as separate devices, it’s perfect.
Now the E2 has not been relegated to the dung heap of electronics. Years ago I bought here a GPS cradle for the car that the E2 plugged into. We both agree that the TOMTOM software on the E2 is superior to my new standalone Nuvi 260 some ways, although every once in a while you have to reset the Palm to get it to work right. So we use the E2 as a GPS now and the Touch for all the old Palm PDA functions…
And of course having itunes music library on the ipod with coverflow is way superior to the RealPlayer on the E2.
